Das Quartett um die aus Rumänien stammende Violinistin Frederika Krier entstand 2005.
Die Musiker lernten sich während des Studiums im neu gegründeten Jazz Institut Berlin kennen. Eigene Kompositionen der Bandmitglieder prägen, neben der ungewöhnlichen Besetzung mit Geige und elektrischer Gitarre, den speziellen Sound der Band.
Voller Widersprüche muten die Einflüsse und Bestandteile an.
Jazz, Groove, Free, Minimalismus, Weltmusik, genauso wie Neue Musik werden hier zu einem organischen Ganzen verschmolzen und eigentlich Gegensätzliches verbindet sich mit erfrischender Leichtigkeit. Afrikanische Rhythmen gehen eine Synthese ein mit indischen Skalen, Schönberg'scher Kompositionstechnik und Drum & Bass Grooves. Im Vordergrund immer das Besondere des Augenblicks, die Improvisation und Erfindungsgabe jedes einzelnen Musikers.
Klare intellektuell geformte Kompositionen mit emotionaler Tiefe, äußerste rhythmische Komplexität und eine ungebremste Spielfreude, mal lyrisch schwelgende, dann wieder energiegeladene, explosive Improvisationen, das sind die Merkmale dieser ungewöhnlichen und einzigartigen Band, die ein wachsendes Publikum begeistert und überzeugt.

The quartett around the romanian-german violinist Frederika Krier was founded 2005. The musicians met during their study at the new Jazz Institut Berlin. Own compositions along with the unusual instrumentation of violin and electric guitar characterize the special sound of the band.

The influences and categorisations seem to be full of opposites.
Jazz, groove, free, minimalism, world music and new classical music melt together to an organic whole and actual contradictions connect with the greatest of ease. African rhythms build an synthesis with indian scales, composition technique of Arnold Schoenberg and drum&bass grooves. But most important is always the creation in the moment, improvisation and personality of each single musician forming something new. This band fascinates with a unique mixture of clear, intellectually formed minimalistic compositions full of emotional depth, a supreme rhythmic complexity and an unbrakeable joy of playing. By the awake and interactive interplay of the four talented musicians there are created intensive lyrical, energyloaded and explosive improvisations and textures.
All these are the characteristic features of this unusual and unique band that excites and convinces a growing audience.

Peter Meyer (guitar)
1984 in Vechta ( Niedersachsen) geboren, erhielt seinen ersten Gitarrenunterricht mit 9 Jahren. Die Musik von Pat Metheny weckte sein Verlangen sich intensiv mit Musik zu beschäftigen. Früh versuchte er seinen eigenen Sound zu finden. Erste Kompositionen entstanden und die Anzahl der Effektgeräte wuchs.
Seit 2004 studiert er am Jazz-Institut-Berlin, wo er bei renommierten Musikern wie Kurt Rosenwinkel, David Friedman und John Hollenbeck Unterricht hat. Ein weiterer wichtiger Lehrer war Frank Möbus.
Als Co-Leader ist er mit dem Trio „Lija“ und dem Quartett „MSV Brecht“ zu hören.
Wichtige Einflüsse sind Bill Frisell, Keith Jarrett, Tom Waits, Jan Gabarek, Jim Black, Coldplay, Björk...

Peter Meyer was born in Vechta/Germany and got his first guitar lesson at the age of 9. Pat Metheny’s music awakened in him the desire to deal with music intensively. Soon he started to find his own sound. First compositions were written and the number of effectmachines grew. 2004 he entered the Jazz Institut Berlin, where he had lessons with Kurt Rosenwinkel, David Friedman and John Hollenbeck. Another important teacher was Frank Möbus.

Main influences are Bill Frisell, Keith Jarrett, Tom Waits, Jan Garbarek, Jim Black, Coldplay, Björk,....

Malte Tönissen (doublebass, composition)
Der 1983 in Wilhelmshaven geborene und in der Nähe von Bremen aufgewachsene Bassist Malte Tönissen begann im Oktober 2004 sein Kontrabass-Studium an der Jazz-Fakultät der Udk Berlin (heute JIB) als Schüler von Sigi Busch.
Mit 15 Jahren begann er zunächst mit E-Bass Unterricht und wechselte 1999 zum Kontrabass über. In den Folgenden Jahren war er Mitglied in einigen regionalen Ensembles, wie einem Schulorchester und einer Musikschul-Bigband, sowie einem Jazzrock-Ensemble. Darüber hinaus spielte er mit dem Gitarristen und Lautisten Lee Santana und sammelte als Sideman Erfahrungen in der regionalen Liedermacherszene.
Heute gehört er dem Berliner Jugend Jazz Orchester an, mit dem er Anfang Oktober 2005 einen Aufenthalt in Los Angeles hatte und im Vorprogramm von Miriam Makeba spielte. Des Weiteren ist er Mitglied des Berliner Avantgarde Sextetts „Hermine“.

Malte Tönissen was born 1983 in Wilhelmshaven/Germany and grew up near Bremen. Malte started his jazzbassstudy 2004 at the Jazz Institut Berlin with Sigi Busch.
At the age of 15 he first started with electric bass, then changed to double bass. In the years after he joined some regional orchestras, big bands and jazzrock ensembles. Among that he played with the guitarrist Lee Santana and got experience in the songwriter scene. He’s a member of the Berlin Youth Jazz Orchestra and played as a support of Miriam Makeba.

When Diego Pinera left Uruguay at the age of 18, he went to the Universidad de arte y musica de la Havana, Cuba. There he got the opportunity to deepen his afrocuban influences on the drums and the timbales. He also got the chance to learn and play with famous Cuban musicians like Enrique Pla (drummer of Irakere) and with newcomer Joaquin Pozo (conga player).
After his time in Cuba, Pinera got hired for one year in a salsa orchestra in Seattle, called Orquesta Cambalache featuring Melcochita on vocals. Back in Uruguay he formed his own trio "Diego Pinera trio" and recorded the CD "Buscando" on the Perro Andaluz label.
Later on he received a scholarship to study at the Berklee College of Music in Boston and was teached by Danilo Peréz. There he recorded with Edu Tancredi the album "Ongoing Dream", featuring Antonio Sanchez, Jerry Bergonzi and Miguel Zenon. In Boston Pinera also recorded "Schades" from Shimon Ben Shir, produced by Oscar Stagnaro. During this time he also fulfils an engagement for the SHAKIRA Tourband. Unfortuanetly he needed to abort his contract ahead of time because of bad health conditions. Since 2003 he has lived in Berlin (Germany). He has been working continuously with musicians such as Wilson DeOliveira, Andreas Schmidt, Martin Auer, Christian Grabandt, Pepe Berns, Tino Derado, Sebastian Schunke, Daniel Stawinski, Robbie Gerken, Dan Freeman and many more. Pinera also directs two ensembles in the music school Berlin-Mitte along with teaching master classes in various different German institutions. Further more he won first price in the Jazz and Blues Award 2005 with Latin Jazz band "Clave Azul".
In April 2006 he had 4 weeks of master classes in Cuba with Cuban greats Jose Luis Quintana "Changuito" and Amadito Valdez. Meanwhile he established oneself as an highly demanded sideman in the german musicscene and he has an excellent reputation as an experienced latin-drummer. In addition he owns an outstanding reputation as a jazzplayer, independent if he play UpTempo swing tunes, modern jazz, odd meters styles or free improvised music. Since 2009 he is official endorser for Meinl Cymbals and Canopus Drums.
